Submissions are now open for the 2022-2023 Hendrix-Murphy Foundation Student and Alumni Playwriting Contests. The two contests are judged by a professional playwright and are open to current Hendrix College students and all Hendrix alumni. Cash prizes of $300 and $100 are awarded to the first and second place winners of each contest. Every entrant receives a written evaluation by the judge.
Both contests are limited to one entry per playwright. Each play submitted must be original, unpublished, and not produced or read in any venue previously. There are no restrictions of subject or style. Please review the contest rules and Modern Play format guide prior to submission. Student submissions must be emailed to Julia Lee McGill at McGill@hendrix.edu by Tuesday, January 31st. Alumni submissions must be emailed by Tuesday, February 14th.
One play of significant promise will be selected for a staged reading in Hendrix College’s annual Playwright’s Theater, which will take place in September 2023. The cast of Playwright’s Theatre is composed of Hendrix alumni and current students. Playwright’s Theatre, founded by theatre faculty Danny Grace and Rosemary Henenberg, furthers the efforts of the contests by giving the playwright the opportunity to hear their work read aloud by actors. Calls for Playwright’s Theater readers will go out during summer 2023.
These contests are jointly sponsored by the Hendrix-Murphy Foundation and the Hendrix Department of Theatre Arts and Dance.
