Using his Murphy Scholar travel funds, accounting major and Murphy Scholar Trevion Williams ’24 explored his passion for Korean language and culture by taking two trips to South Korea.
Williams’s first time traveling internationally was a one-month language immersion experience in Seoul. He fully immersed himself in everyday life and customs by living with a host family and enrolling in courses through the Education First International Institute. The curriculum consisted of a blend of language courses and guided excursions throughout the city.
“Through speaking with my host family, I witnessed a remarkable transformation in my language proficiency. The project was a life-changing experience—one that allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone, explore South Korea for the very first time, and immerse myself in the rich tapestry of South Korean culture.”
A year later Williams returned to South Korea, this time choosing to stay in Daegu—the fourth-largest metropolitan city in the nation. He again opted to immerse himself fully by living with a host family. While there, he taught English as a second language, which included the development of lesson plans aimed at building connections between American and Korean cultures.
“Engaging with Korean society and observing their customs, values, and social dynamics broadened my horizons,” said Williams. “The trip allowed me to develop a deeper appreciation for the unique blend of traditional and modern elements that define Korean culture.”
Williams plans to continue his education at Hendrix through the Master of Arts in Accounting program.
